The Simple Podcast Equipment Package is ideal for podcasters with a desire to have a great sound and don’t want to deal with an audio mixer or digital audio recorder. This equipment relies on software to record podcast episodes. If you are recording a solo show, you can use Audacity, Garageband, or Adobe Audition. Recommended Microphones

The Audio Technica AT 2005 is an excellent microphone for traveling or for those on a tight budget.  This mic is identical to the ATR 2100 on the inside.  It has a USB connection that works well with PC or Mac and it also has an XLR connection that can be used to connect the mic to an audio mixer.  It comes with the mic, USB cable, XLR cable, and small (although impractical) stand.  This is a dynamic style microphone.

The Shure SM58 is a legendary vocal microphone.  This mic has a reputation for being durable and delivering accurate vocal tones in live and studio settings.  This is the microphone that we used during the entire run of The Fringe Podcast through mid 2013.  It is a dynamic microphone which means that it will not pick up extra room noise or echo nearly as much as a condenser microphone.  The Shure SM58 has an XLR connection and must be used with a mixer.

The Heil PR 40 is considered by most professional podcasters to be the gold standard of podcasting microphones.  Used by highly respected podcasters such as Leo Laporte and Cliff Ravenscraft, this microphone delivers depth and vocal qualities usually only found in high end radio microphones.  The Heil PR-40 is also a dynamic microphone which makes it ideal for less than sound-proof environments.  We upgraded to this microphone in mid 2013.

The HTDZ HT-81 is an inexpensive shotgun microphone, with the performance that rivals many higher prices shotgun microphones. The HTDZ HT-81 is a super uni-directional, ultra-cardioid shotgun style microphone. It is a condenser microphone that can run off a single AA battery or phantom power.

Recommended Mic Stands

The On Stage DS7200B is an excellent microphone stand for those who travel or are on a tight budget.  The  mic stand has an adjustable height of 9.5″ to 15.5″, and has a very stable base.  We use this mic stand when we travel.

The RODE PSA1 is a great boom style mic stand.  This style of mic stand allows you to place the mic in virtually any desired position or angle, while occupying very little desk space.  We use a very similar style of mic boom that is no longer produced.  The RODE PSA1 is the closest we’ve been able to find like the ones we use.

Recommended Audio Mixers

**Note-We do NOT recommend ANY Behringer mixers.

The Peavey PV8 is an excellent compact mixer.  It has 4 XLR inputs, 2 stereo line inputs, and a 3-band EQ on all inputs.  It has 2 sends in addition to the main outputs.  This mixer also has 1/4″ line inputs and inserts for each XLR channel which means this mixer is compatible with off-board effects, EQs, or Compressor/Limiter/Gates.

The Mackie 802VLZ4 is a premium audio mixer from one of the most respected audio mixer brands.  The Mackie 802VLZ4 features 3 XLR inputs, each with 1/4″ input and insert options.  In addition to the 1/4″ unbalanced outputs, this mixer features balanced XLR outputs.  It also includes 2 stereo input channels and mute buttons for each channel.

The Soundcraft EPM6 is an outstanding audio mixer from a premier and respected brand.  The Soundcraft EPM6 has 6 XLR inputs and 2 stereo channel inputs with premium preamps.  Each input channel has an insert port for off-board effects or compressor/limiter/gate, as well as a 4-band EQ and mute button.  It also features two auxiliary output busses and balanced XLR outputs.  This is the audio mixer we use.

Recommended Digital Audio Recorders

The Roland R-05 is a great digital audio recorder with an excellent reputation.  It features stereo recording via the built-in condenser mics or either of the 2 analog inputs.  It also features 2 mic gain settings, an on-board limiter and an on-board low cut switch.  The menu system is straight forward, a 2GB SD card is included, and it has 30 hour battery life.  It is powered by 2 AA batteries (included) or a $40 power supply (not included).

The Zoom H2n is an excellent digital audio recorder. It features up to 4 channel simultaneous recording via the 5 high-quality on-board condenser mics or either of the 2 analog inputs. It also features 10 mic gain settings, an on-board compressor/limiter, lo cut, and auto gain settings.  It includes a 2GB SD card and has 20 hour battery life.  It is powered by 2 AA batteries (included) or any mini-usb cable and wall adapter.

The Zoom H5 is a top-quality digital audio recorder.  It features two XLR/TRS combo inputs which allow you to plug 2 microphones directly into the recorder.  Additionally, it includes a removable XY capsule.  The XY capsule can be swapped out with Zoom’s mid-side mic capsule, shotgun mic capsule, or XLR/TRS capsule.  The Zoom H5 features an on-board compressor/limiter, lo cut filter, phantom power and MUCH more! Compressor/Limiter/Gate

The Behringer Multicom Pro-XL MDX4600 is a 4 channel compressor limiter gate.  This is a great tool that will prevent distortion caused by talking too loud or yelling,  add depth and more bass to the sound of your voice, and prevent any ambient sound from coming into the mic when you’re not speaking.  We initially used the Behringer Pro-XL MDX4600, but each channel but one developed hissing over time and became unusable after about 18 months.  Many other have NOT had this same experience.

The DBX 166xs is a 2 channel compressor/limiter/gate.  DBX has a strong reputation for quality and long lasting equipment, and that has been our experience as well.  This rack mounted processor provides great sound, has a clear, easy to use control panel.  The DBX 166xs can be used in stereo or dual-mono operation and features balanced inputs and outputs on 1/4″ TRS and XLR connectors.

Headphone Amplifiers

The Behringer HA400 is an excellent 4-channel headphone amp for those on a tight budget, travel, or have a small work space. It includes 4 1/4″ outputs, each equipped with a high-power stereo amplifier and volume control.

The Behringer HA 4700 is an professional 4-channel headphone amplifier. Each channel includes separate balance, bass, treble, and output levels. Each input also includes a Aux input. The Behringer HA4700 allows inputs via 2 XLR or 2 1/4″ TRS input jacks on the rear. We used this model for just over 1 year before the channels began developing a hissing sound.

The ART HeadAmp6 is a professional 6-channel headphone amplifier. This amplifier includes 6 output channels, each with aux in, balance, treble, and output gain controls. The main input signal can be connected via two XLR inputs or two TRS inputs. The ART HeadAmp6 also has 6 1/4″ outputs in the rear or the option of XLR or two TRS thru outputs on the rear.

Equipment Rack

The OnStage RS7030 is a small yet sturdy mixer or equipment rack. With dimentionsof 19.5″x23″x14″, it easily fits below or on top of a desk and holds up to 75 lbs of equipment. The rack ships with all necessary mounting screws and holds up to 12 rack mountable units.

Power Conditioners

The Furman SS-6B is a heavy-duty power conditioner block with an excellent reputation. Features include a 15′ power cord, 6 outlets, circuit breaker, EMI/RFI noise attenuation, and heavy-duty metal construction.

The Furman M-8x is a low cost, yet high performance rack-mounted power conditioner. The M-8x features 8 rear power outlets and 1 front power outlet. The M-8x features noise filtration from radio and electromagnetic interference and surge protection on each outlet. If you’re experiencing noise or humming in your recording setup, this will drastically reduce or remove the noise.

Studio Lighting

The ePhoto H9004S4 studio lighting kit is a powerful and portable studio lighting system. This kit works great for video and photo lighting or for green screen projects. The kit comes with 16 45w light bulbs (5500k), 4 6.5 ft adjustable tripods, 4 16″x24″ softboxes, and a duffle bag style carrying case.

Webcam

The Logitech C920 provides full 1080p video recording and calling. It is designed to easily clip on to any computer monitor or tripod with its built-in tripod mount. Features a high-quality Carl Zeiss lens with 20-step autofocus and built-in dual stereo microphones with automatic noise reduction. Works with PC or Mac. This is the webcam we use for our streaming and most of our YouTube videos.

DSLR Camera

The Panasonic Lumix G6 is a lightweight, mirrorless interchangeable lens, or compact systems camera. It features a 15.9 MP Four Thirds CMOS sensor, viewfinder, and a 3″ LCD articulating touch screen. It has over 40 different lenses available and includes a 3.5mm external mic input jack, records video in 1080p @60fps (and 10 other formats), shoots up to 7 images per second, and includes a panorama feature.
